What is a CNC machine? Basically you draw something in a free CAD software like google sketchup, you can also use paid programs like Fusion360, autoCAD, or SolidWorks. Export your drawing in DXF format. Then import the drawing to a software like CAMBAM, then send the file to the machine through a free program like chilipeppr. Your dream is now a reality. The tool chain may sound complicated but it is actually very easy, once you get used to it an idea can pop into your head and be a physical object in less than an hour! Want a more detailed example? See our blog post, "How to CNC"
What will you need after you click the add to cart button above? You will need some tools to build the kit, nothing out of the ordinary, 5mm allen wrench, 8mm socket, a square, soldering iron, phillips head screw driver and some free time.
You will need a piece of MDF to use as a spoiler board, this is what you will mount stuff you are going to cut. Two pieces that are 12"x 12". This can be found at most home goods stores.
How will you know how to build it? Nice and easy, we have a full build manual we will send you a link to and the Openbuilds team put out some great videos. It really could not be more simple.
What is the build area? Approximately 12" x 12" in the horizontal plane and 1.125" in the vertical.
